Only a Matter of Time
Two players inch closer to 100 than ever tonight.
100 points. A single game benchmark set by Wilt Chamberlain over 60 years ago. A mark that was for a long time thought as untouchable. After tonight, it feels like it's only a matter of time.
Tonight, the record for second most points in a single game were broken twice in a span of 50 minutes. Octo of the Long Beach Tentacles amassed 88 points accompanied by his 29 rebounds and 6 blocks on 49 field goal attempts in a murder of a victory against the Indiana Pacers, mirroring Chamberlain's box score dominance eerily well.
In the very next game aired, David Bowie of the Las Vegas Microwaves topped Octo, putting up an unreal 95 points, also breaking the record for 3 pointers made, with 17 in a blowout loss to the Seattle Tigers.
Even scarier for Chamberlain's record, Bowie was well within his ability to reach the record, as he did not attempt a shot in the last 3:48 of the game, despite 3 offensive rebounds in that span. It was clear that the superstar was more frustrated at the insurmountable loss than he was thirsty for the record. The loss marked their second straight loss as 3 of their 9 players suffer from injury, including the Robin to Bowie's Batman, Spots.
When asked about their respective performances, the players responded as such:
"I can score 100 whenever I want. But I'm not like Sharky and I want to win games." (Octo on if 100 seems attainable after his season high 88 points.)
"Yeah, probably." (David Bowie on if he could've scored 100 had he wanted to towards the end of the game.)
Bowie Also scored 74 less 8 days ago on Oct. 25, and is averaging 69 points per game. With his scoring prowess, it seems like only a matter of time before Chamberlain's long-standing spot in the pantheon of scoring will be dethroned.
